Transforming the Chan: Full Program

Join DCA's Frontline Media team for a series of free and interactive new media arts displays and workshops transforming the exterior and surroundings of Darwin’s newest contemporary art space, the Chan building.

Time: 6.30 pm - 8.30 pm
Where:  Chan Contemporary Art Space, State Square, opposite Parliament House
*A few activities will also coincide with exhibition openings.

Every second Wednesday evening from July to September, the Chan building in State Square is transformed into a live digital canvas by Darwin Community Arts resident team of new media artists. Interactive and playful, the artists will use new digital technologies, laser, video and light projections, kinetic forms and soundscapes to enliven the Chan and its surroundings. The artists invite you to come and experiment with them in creating and owning this new and exciting contemporary art space in Darwin.

Lost Sounds and Quick Responses 
Wed 6th July: 6.30 - 8.30pm

Uncover Darwin’s lost sounds with an interactive piano webcam triggering the sounds of Darwin's extremes and bring your mobile to learn some of the Chan’s hidden secrets through QR technology.

Street Art Jam 
Wed 20th July: 6.30-8.30pm

Join artists in transforming the Chan building into a live digital canvas. Learn how to create your own large-scale digital street art using laser, tag tool and other new media technologies.

Community Picnic at the Chan 
Sat 23rd July: 4.00 - 7.00pm

Celebrate with your community at one of My Sister’s Kitchen’s well known Community Gatherings - but this time outside the Chan! A free catered event with exciting cultural performances. *Registrations required.

Lighting up the Chan 
Wed 3rd August: 6.30 - 8.30 pm

For the month of August the Chan will be lit up  with bright swirls of colour and patterns for all passers by to enjoy. Come down and help light up the Chan!

Traditional Art, Digital Paint 
Fri 12th August: 6.30 - 8.30 pm

Join us in painting the Chan Building in the colours and patterns of  the NT’s natural environment with digital paintbrushes projected live onto the Chan’s walls and motion animated to a unique soundtrack.

The Chan’s Changing Reality 
Sat 13th August: 6.30 - 8.30 pm

Join DCA for the launch of the Chan’s new Augmented Reality artworks placed around the  exterior of the Chan, and a demonstration of the technology by Frontline artists.

Playing in the Shadows 
Wed 17th August: 6.30 - 8.30 pm

Join artists in a playful evening of transforming the Chan with interactive shadow play, video projections, LED and fibre optic lighting, all to a unique Darwin soundscape.

Being a Territory 
Dates TBC: Fri 19th - Mon 22nd Aug: 6.30 - 8.30 pm

Be immersed in outdoor sound and light activities exploring the many themes of the Territory’s first century. This unique installation of projected artworks created by schools from across the Northern Territory commemorates 100 years and more of amazing stories.

Recycled Sounds 
Wed 31st August: 6.30-8.30pm

Join musicians and sound artists to create  a new world at the Chan in this unique workshop using recycled sounds and strange instruments  mixed live with surreal projected imagery.

Chan Virtual Gallery Launch 
Wed 14th September: 6.30-8.30 pm

It’s time to explore the Chan in it’s new online gallery in Second Life. Walk your avatar through the  gallery where things aren’t always as they seem. The launch will include the Frontline Media team  demonstrating the new gallery space and projecting it live onto the exterior of the Chan.

Interactive Community Interface Forum 
Wed 28th September: 10.00am - 12.00 noon  

An Interactive Community Interface Forum held by DCA’s Frontline new media artists. Free for all  community members interested in learning more about emerging new media technologies and  their applications to interactive community and public art. *Registrations required.
