Kenya citizen reporter election projectThe African Great Lakes Initiative plans on using FrontLineSMS with our citizen reporters/election observers for the 2012/2013 Kenya elections. On Jan 23, the ICC announced their indictments of 6 Kenyans (4 indicted and 2 not indicted). There was talk that this might lead to violence so I decided to do a test run with FrontlineSMS. My intention is somewhat different than usual because I need an interactive system. This is not an open source system, but a closed system where we know who people are because they have registered with the system. On Jan 23, I had 45 people registered and I received 29 reports before and after the announcement. There was no violence, but nonetheless the information I received was revealing - for example, one person reported that in the town of Jua Kali where there is usually a market day on Monday, few of the market vendors showed up so there was no market day. I had a number of issues with the program - some I think because it is not yet meant to be interactive like I want it to be. Perhaps I did not use the system properly in some cases so I would like any advice people have on this. I use Safaricom because the tower is two blocks from my house and I get good reception. I get poor reception from Airtel and Orange. I live in the small town of Lumakanda, Lugari District in western Province.1. The biggest problem I found is that it took 30 seconds for me to send an SMS. Therefore when I sent it to the 45 people it took over 20 minutes. For the election cycle I am hoping to have 1000 to 2000 citizen reporters in western Kenya. This would mean that it would take 8 to 16 hours for an SMS to go to everyone! I checked my phone and it took 6 second to send an SMS. This means that FrontlineSMS is taking 24 seconds per SMS. Any ideas on how to deal with this?2. I found that when I tried to export the information, the program exported everything which means that I had to hand delete the SMS that were not important. This includes the fact that I sent about 135 SMSs and received about 75. In order for the sender to know that we have received their SMS, I send a reply of "Thanks." Is there any way of determining how to export only the messages you want to export?3. I found that I could not "cut and paste" into messages that I was sending out. Thus I had to sometimes retype the same message over and over to each person. Is there any way to do this? This was for messages that came in at different times. I know how to send out the same message to a group.4. I found that I could delete everything or only one message at a time. I had all those "Thanks" to delete one by one. Is there any way to delete a whole section, but not all, of SMSs at one time?5. When I put in dates for the messages, that was fine, but when I tried to change the dates, it did not work until I turned off the system and turned it back on again and put in the new dates.6. Keywords. My keyword is "fcpt" (Friends Church Peace Teams, our local partner). I am working with cell phone folks where creativity is prized and not with computer geeks who know that every letter has to be perfect for something to work. So people send the keyword as FCPT, Fcpt, fcpt, (blank)fcpt, fctp (with period), and other options. To get the keyword to send the "thanks" automatically, the keyword had to be perfect and at the beginning of the SMS. Is there any way to search the message for fcpt (any variation of capital and small) anywhere in the message so that the response is automatically sent? Okay. I think this is enough for now. Any ideas?David Zarembka, CoordinatorAfrican Great Lakes InitiativeSee More

Call for proposals: Mobilising Knowledge for DevelopmentHi all,I wanted to share an opportunity which could be of interest for some FrontlineSMS users:IDS Knowledge Services is inviting organisations to apply for a small technical grants. These grants are available to application developers in this list of eligble countries wishing to use information and communication technologies to repurpose, and contextualise research on development issues and so inform evidence based policy making. To find out more about this opportunity visit: http://api.ids.ac.uk/about/grants.shtmlI hope this is helpful. Thanks,FloSee More

User meet-up in Phnom Penh, CambodiaHi all,There have been many interesting uses of FrontlineSMS in Cambodia, and I've recently been in touch with a few new users based in Cambodia, too. In Phnom Penh there is a new FrontlineSMS user named Sophie who would like to coordinate a user meet-up where she's based, so I thought I'd start a new discussion here to see how many people would be interested in attending?Meet-ups can be really valuable to share experiences and lessons learned among the community of FrontlineSMS users in your area. If you'd be interested in attending a meet-up in Phnom Penh then please reply to this discussion or contact me directly via florence[at]frontlinesms[dot]com. Further details to follow as plans firm up.Thanks! \o/FloSee More
